Support and guidance

NGDC is the designated NERC data centre for the storage and management of geoscience data in the UK. Our team of specialist data management staff provide support to all those depositing to and re-using data from NGDC.  

We have a number of guidance pages that address the various user groups we serve. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the NGDC (ngdc@bgs.ac.uk).

NERC grant-funded researchers 

As part of the  (EDS), NGDC is the place of deposit for NERC-funded datasets that fall under the discipline of geoscience, in compliance with , to which all NERC grant holders are subject. 

Further guidance and FAQs can be found on our NERC grant-funded researchers page. Please visit data management plans (DMPs) or generating digital object identifiers (DOIs) for more guidance on your deposited datasets.  

UK drilling companies and contractors 

Under UK legislation, BGS (and NGDC as an extension) is designated as the place to which must be given and the resulting records must be deposited. Full guidance on complying with these statutory requirements can be found on our drilling legislation and obligations page, as well as more general borehole drilling best practice.  

National Geological Repository users 

All those wishing to access or deposit material to the National Geological Repository (NGR), the 51ΑΤΖζ science facility that houses our physical core, samples and specimen collections, can find further information on the NGR pages.

Research data management best practice  

The NGDC team have a wealth of knowledge and expertise and are happy to help with any research data management-related questions. Further resources on good research data management can be found on:
